Rockové legendy - Uriah Heep
URIAH HEEP
Každý, kdo se systematičtěji věnuje poslechu a dění v oblasti hard & heavy (a rocku vůbec), se časem propracuje do "prehistorického" období konce šedesátých a začátku sedmdesátých let, kdy vznikala základní a dá se říci, dodnes platná - pravidla tvrdé hry.
Na první průzkumné mise Who, Iron Butterfly, Yardbirds a dalších "tvrdě-rockových" pionýrů navázali, spolu s Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin atd. i Uriah Heep. Do pomyslné hardrockové pyramidy byly jmenovanými zasunuty první mohutné základové kvádry. Ten sabbatovský byl z temné, masivní, hrubě tesané žuly, zeppelinovský prorůstal břečtanem rhythm & blues i folku, párplovský vrásnilo kování v podobě dějinných riffů. No a nablýskaný uriášovský byl zdoben elegantními melodickými křivkami, vrstvami vokálů a pompou. Každý je navždy nedílnou součástí rockové historie.
Z uvedených souborů jsou Uriah Heep hudebním tiskem nejméně zmapováni. A přitom je mezi svými zásadními inspiracemi uváděli mj. průkopníci NWOBHM (Nové vlny britského heavy metalu) Iron Maiden i slovutní Queen. Monumentálně vystavěná balada July Morning je hudebními publicisty právem řazena k opusům velikosti Child In Time, či Stairway To Heaven, geniálně zapamatovatelná refrénovka Lady In Black v našich končinách doslova zlidověla a žije takříkajíc svým vlastní životem. Kdo z pohlavně aktivních teenagerů nelákal před čtvrtstoletím k nemravnostem dívčinu svého srdce při tónech ploužáku PARK - propadl ze sextaktiky a nic si (právem) neužil, no a kdo nenadskakoval v unifikovaných botaskách na mládežnických čajích při Easy Livin, snad ani tehdy společensky neexistoval.
JAKO TO VŠECHNO ZAČALO
Začněme naši story pěkně od počátku a přenesme se do konce šedesátých let. Typický styl a sound Uriah Heep totiž vznikal souběžně ve dvou různých a přitom proplétajících se liniích. Jednu z nich reprezentoval Ken Hensley v souborech Gods (Head Machine) a Toe Fat, druhou pak Box s Byronem ve Spice.
Gods (Head Machine) ministory. Kapelu GODS založil v roce 1965 kytarista Mick Taylor (ano ten z Rolling Stones), velký to bluesový fanoušek Johna Mayalla (však si taky v roce 1967 splnil sen a stal se členem jeho Bluesbreakers). Pro naše téma je důležité, že krátce předtím do Gods přichází klávesák a zpěvák Ken Hensley a po Taylorově odchodu předělává soubor k obrazu svému. V sestavě se vedle něj objevuje kytarista Joe Konas a bicmen Lee Kerslake, na místě baskytaristů se střídá další pozdější kolega z uriášů Paul Newton a slavný Greg Lake (King Crimson, EL&P, ...), načež se před nahráváním debutu vrací původní John Glass***** (mj. Jethro Tull). Pěkné defilé známých jmen, což? Hensleyho honosný kompoziční rukopis, masivní hammondy, sametový hlas - přecházející ve vyšších polohách takřka ve falzet, plus doprovodné vícehlasy - to vše již v éře Gods spoludefinovalo muzikantsky načančený styl, později tak typický pro Uriah Heep. Gods nahráli dvě alba: výtečné Genesis (1968) a o něco méně progresivní To Samuel A Son (1969). V prosinci 1969 bylo připraveno i třetí Orgasm, to však vyšlo až v roce 1970, avšak pod hlavičkou fiktivního souboru s názvem Head Machine, kdy se muzikanti z Gods ukrývali pod humornými pseudonymy typu Ken Leslie apod.. Zvukově poměrně syrový, klávesově orientovaný kousek.
Toe Fat ministory. V červnu 1969 odchází jádro Gods (Hensley, Kerslake, Glass*****) do Cliff Bennett Bandu, později přejmenovanému na Toe Fat. Existují dvě alba: Toe Fat (1970) a Two (1970). Ken Hensley zde překvapivě vystupuje pouze v roli doprovodného muzikanta, až na výjimky nezpívá ani neskládá, proto není tato etapa pro "uriahopology" až tak důležitá.
Spice (Stalkers)ministory. Zrod druhé pre-uriášovské větve nese datum 1965. Tehdy zakládá Mick Box kapelu Stalkers, hrající na školních plesech převzatý rhythm & bluesový repertoár. V roce 1966 se připojuje zpěvák David Garrick, uměleckým jménem David Byron. V roce 1968 se Box s Byronem rozhodují zprofesionalizovat, zakládají Spice. Z Gods přechází basista Paul Newton, jehož otec v prvních měsících skupinu finančně podpoří. Ozdobou soundu Spice byl jak rockový tenor Davida Byrona, tak i melodická, s pedálem wah-wah nerozlučně spjatá, kytara Micka Boxe. Stylově se Spice pohybovali v oblasti raného hardrocku, nepříliš vzdáleného od tehdejších Deep Purple a částečně i ve formátu bílého blues. Mick Box přiznává, že k myšlence přidat klávesy ho inspirovali Vanilla Fudge, jejichž sound byl na kombinaci hammondek s elektrickou kytarou postaven. Krátká epizoda z klávesákem Colinem Woodem (ex Siren) skončila příchodem Kennetha Hensleye, jehož do Spice přivedl starý kumpán z Gods - Paul Newton. Archivy hovoří o zhruba desítce songů Spice. Větší část najdou encyklopedisté na výběrovce Lansdowne Tapes, dva pak na reprezentativním 4CD boxu A Time Of Relevation.
SMĚLÉ VYKROČENÍ
Historka o původu jména URIAH HEEP je dostatečně známa, takže jenom ve zkratce. Producent SPICE - GERRY BRON zahlédl v londýnském metru plakát, zvoucí na divadelní adaptaci románu CHARLESe DICKENSe - DAVID COPPERFIELD, kde se skvělo i jméno jedné z postav - URIAH HEEP. S nápadem na nový název kapely přišel druhý den do studia a po menší diskusi byl jeho návrh členy SPICE přijat. Zakládajícími členy UH se tak stali kytarista Mick Box, zpěvák David Byron, klávesák Ken Hensley, basák PAUL NEWTON a drummer ALEX NAPIER.
První album URIAH HEEP - ... VERY 'EAVY ... VERY 'UMBLE (únor 1970) otevírá výrazný Boxův riff songu GYPSY. Hodně recenzentů přirovnává masivní hardrockový styl a sound raných uriášů k zeppelinům - ovšem to jsou, dle mého názoru, spíše náhodné letmé doteky, než zřetelnější paralela. Jednak BOX pracuje s kytarou naprosto jinak než PAGE a navíc u URIAH HEEP hrají významnou roli hammondy a doprovodné vokály - což tehdy LED ZEPP. vůbec neprovozovali! Navíc občasný bluesový akcent má v hardrocku URIAH HEEP roli koření, zatímco u zeppelinů je to kmenová součást jejich stylu. Perličkou je, že ani jednu skladbu debutu nesložil KEN HENSLEY! BOX s BYRONEM zřejmě měli, v době jeho příchodu do kapely, již repertoár hotov. Jeho vklad - zejména aranžérský - je přesto slyšet z každé noty.
Ještě poznámka na okraj. V průběhu nahrávání alba odchází NAPIER a ve dvou skladbách jej proto nahrazuje studiový muzikant NIGEL OLLIE OLSSON, vypůjčený z doprovodného bandu ELTONA JOHNA, ke kterému se záhy a nadlouho vrátil. NIGEL OLSSON je dodnes mimochodem aktivním muzikantem a producentem, se svou grupou NIGEL OLSSON'S DRUM ORCHESTRA & CHORUS nahrál několik alb a v roce 1997 realizoval svůj bombastický projekt GUITAR ORCHESTRA, za účasti RAY FENWICKA, TIMA RENWICKA a dalších.
V říjnu 1970 vychází druhý albový kousek - SALISBURY. Na první, písničkové straně alba dominují již zmíněné perly, "unplugged song" LADY IN BLACK, zpívaná HENSLEYem a pavučinově průzvučná balada THE PARK. Takřka celé béčko zabírá titulní, 17-ti minutový opus, kdy se URIAH HEEP, za doprovodu 22-ti členného orchestru, pokusili realizovat fúzi rocku s klasikou. Rozhodně se jim pokus vyvedl lépe než párplům. Oproti úderné jedničce působí dvojka zvolněněji, košatěji.
Jako hráč na bicí nástroje se na SALISBURY objevuje KEITH BAKER (ex BAKERLOO, MAY BLITZ, GRAHAM BOND ORGANIZATION, JOINT, DADDY, SUPERTRAMP), ovšem záhy odchází do muzikantského ústraní, z něhož jej počátkem 90' na čas vyvádí PAUL NEWTON, jenž ho pozval k účinkování ve své klubové kapele OFF THE CUFF.
Vsunuji málo známou "WEED special story". KEN HENSLEY si v březnu 1971, tedy v období mezi SALISBURY a LOOK AT YOURSELF, odskočil (dá se říci, že inkognito - na přebalu LP nebyly žádné údaje o jeho účasti) zahrát a zapět s partou německých muzikantů, fungujících dříve, či později v kapelách jako VIRUS, AMON DUUL II, LUCIFER'S FRIEND, ATLANTIS a RATTLES. Výsledkem bylo album WEED ...! Chutný hardrock, zdobený krautrockem - německou to zakouřenou specialitkou a plněný mohutnými hammondami, zdvojenými kytarami a KENovým vokálem.
VRCHOL
Vraťme se k URIAH HEEP. Třetí studiovka LOOK AT YOURSELF (listopad 1971) ukazuje již potenciál URIAH HEEP v plné síle. Album je rámováno hard'n'rollovými peckami, dominuje našlápnutý, mohutně vrstvený sound, střídání temp i nálad, zní hymnický majestát JULY MORNING i kompozičně a muzikantsky náročná dvojkombinace TEARS IN MY EYES / SHADOWS OF GRIEFF. Gigantický hardrock par excelence - jeden ze tří UH vrcholů. Pokračuje střídání u perkusí - na trojce hraje IAIN CLARK (ex CRESSIDA). Perličkou je účast MANFREDA MANNA s jeho mini moogem v JULY MORNING a exhibice perkusistů z afrorockové OSIBISY ve finálovém free odvazu otevíráku LOOK AT YOURSELF.
Na podzimním turné roku 1971 odchází překvapivě PAUL NEWTON, kterého na čtyři měsíce nahrazuje MARK CLARKE (COLOSSEUM) a později i IAIN CLARK, na jehož místo přichází LEE KERSLAKE, dávný to spoluhráč K.HENSLEYe z GODS. Problémy s rytmickou sekcí na čas končí angažováním GARYho THAINa (KEEF HARTLEY BAND).
IAIN CLARK dnes učí hru na bicí, MARK CLARKE patří k oporám jazzrockového kolosu COLOSSEUM, mezitím se objevuje jako kmenový člen, nebo host na spoustě alb různých interpretů (mj. KEN HENSLEY, TEMPEST, RAINBOW, BILLY SQUIER, BLACK ROSE, MICHAELBOLTON, URGENT, IAN HUNTER, MOUNTAIN).
Přechod z osmi na šestnáct stop využili URIAH HEEP na DEMONS AND WIZARDS (květen 1972) dokonale. Již tak skvělé background vokály jsou rozehrány do úchvatných podob, ve forte pasážích se vrší kytary i celé plástve hammondů, pianissima zdobí vyhrávky dvanactistrunných dřev i honosného grand piana. Právě toto dílo dokonale reprezentuje a definuje pojem pompézní rock. Hity zastupuje na čtyřce pádivá odpichovka EASY LIVIN, gradujícím vrcholem je pak závěrečná dvojkompozice PARADISE/ THE SPELL s libozvučně vazbeným kytarovým duo-partem MICKA a KENA.
Bezprostředně po sérii letních Open Air vystoupení v Evropě i zámoří vstupují URIAH HEEP na podzim roku 1972 do studia, aby pod pracovním názvem "pátek třináctého" zahájili práce na pátém albu a KEN si mohl konečně vyzkoušet vlastního mini-mooga. MAGICIAN'S BIRTHDAY (listopad 1972) měl být původně, podle slov HENSLEYho, koncepční kus. Ostatní členové kapely i zavedený uriášovský producent GERRY BRON však byli - dle mého názoru ke škodě věci - proti. Pětku s fantasy přebalem, opět od ROGERa DEANa, rozjíždí pateticky vypjatá SUNRISE, následuje sada standardních rockáren, prokládaných sladce tesknými baladami, závěr patří třídilné titulní kompozici, v jejíž instrumentální části si hoši, zejména MICK a LEE, dosyta zablbli. Zejména tato skladba udržuje pravověrný uriášovský stylový azimut, takřka polovina skladeb je totiž stahována středním AOR (Adult Oriented Rock = rock pro dospělé) proudem a kapela tak zbytečně tlumí svůj razantní hardrockový potenciál.
Parádní náladu následného světového turné skvěle zachycuje výpravné URIAH HEEP LIVE dvojalbum, vydané v květnu 1973. Vedle párplovského MADE IN JAPAN patří k tomu nej, co bylo v oblasti hardrocku naživo nahráno v první polovině 70.let.
V květnu 1973 vydává KEN HENSLEY svůj baladický sólový debut PROUD WORDS AND DUSTY SHELF, na kterém mu z kapely vypomohli GARY THAIN a LEE KERSLAKE.
Je přímo neuvěřitelné, že již 7.srpna 1973 vychází další studiové album, SWEET FREEDOM, dle mínění mnohých fans jedno ze tří nejlepších alb URIAH HEEP vůbec! Změna studia, obměna soundu, návrat k hutnému bombastickému stylu a hardrockovým kořenům - to jsou základní atributy sedmičky. Co skladba, to rockový obelisk. MELODY MAKER označuje toto období za vrcholné v kariéře URIAH HEEP a autoři "The Metal Bible", Roland Roesmer a Hubert Wattenbach, umístili do své TOP 100 všech dob hned čtyři alba (3.,4.,5.,7.) URIAH HEEP!
DOLŮ, NAHORU, DOLŮ, ..
Podle všech prognóz měl následovat poslední krůček, stvrzující světovou extraligu formace - veleturné po USA. Osud tomu však chtěl jinak, série onemocnění pobořila plány na dobytí Ameriky a tak se URIAH HEEP vracejí do Evropy, ke svým věrným, aspoň s novou supervýkonnou aparaturou.
V kapele, přesunuté do mnichovských studií, dochází k četným názorovým třenicím, BYRON chlastá své šampáňo kokteily jako o závod, THAIN chce být slyšet silněji, HENSLEY se stále více věnuje své druhé sólovce a BOX to sám s LEEM nevytrhne. Hektická atmosféra se přenáší do nahrávek nového alba, vydaného v červnu 1974. Úvodní, titulní balada WONDERWORLD je sice vrcholně majestátním kouskem, pak už to však jede šupem dolů. Skladby zní sice povědomě, nemají však kompoziční eleganci a sílu svých předchůdců, jsou melodicky kostrbaté a aranžérsky křečovité, tak jako nakonec i tehdejší muzikantský projev kapely (ta se nakonec vyskytuje ve studiu na etapy), vše zvýrazňuje neuvěřitelně špatný zvuk a mix (o to větší díky za remasterovanou verzi z roku 1996 která napravuje co se dá). První výraznější zklamání.
Turné, přestože hojně navštěvované a úspěšné, odhalilo pokračující drogový rozklad GARYHO THAINA, jenž vyvrcholil jeho pádem z pódia v Dallasu. Do sestavy se tento talentovaný muzikant již nevrátil, jeho životní pouť pak skončila 8. prosince 1975, ve věku pouhých 27 let.
Mezitím, v dubnu 1975, pod názvem EAGER TO PLEASE vydává KEN HENSLEY své druhé album . Opět se jedná o baladicky a hymnicky laděnou kolekci písní. Starý přítel MARK CLARKE, plus BUGS PEMBERTON tvoří rytmickou sekci, B.J.COLE hostuje se svou slavnou steel kytarou.
Jako posila pro nahrávání RETURN TO FANTASY (červen 1975) byl přijat JOHN WETTON, starý to harcovník z FAMILY a KING CRIMSON. Poslech, v pořadí již devátého, opusu URIAH HEEP prozrazuje, že KEN HENSLEY znovu převzal otěže pevněji do svých rukou. Jeho klávesy i kompoziční rukopis dominují. Návrat slaví i typické uriášovské chóry. Pozorný rocker však registruje pokračující odklon od hardrockového formátu, směrem k zaoblenému rockovému mainstramu.
Následující HIGH AND MIGHTY (květen 76) je posledním albem s DAVIDEM BYRONEM a současně jedním z nejslabších. Panika způsobená nástupem punku postihla i tým URIAH HEEP. Propad se konal na všech frontách, kapela zní místy jako karikatura sebe sama a nepovedená produkce GERRYHO BRONA doslova zahnala její styl/sound někam mimo rock. Dnes se dá poslouchat víceméně z piety a nostalgie.
Poslední kapkou, s níž přetekla trpělivost zbytku kapely se zdevastovaným alkoholikem BYRONEM, bylo vystoupení 25. června 1976 ve španělském Bilbau, kdy DAVID zapoměl text a urážel publikum. Hudební tisk měl senzaci prvního řádu. URIAH HEEP bez BYRONA?! Co bude dál? Konec? Ke všemu odchází (k ROXY MUSIC) JOHN WETTON. Tisk spekuluje o nástupci BYRONA, padají jména jako GILLAN, COVERDALE, PLANT, OSBOURNE, HUNTER, RODGERS, STORACE (KROKUS), HOLTON (HEAVY METAL KIDS). Ovšem tou dobou měl již KEN HENSLEY svého žolíka v rukávu - JOHNa LAWTONa, jehož matově kovový hlas zdobil na přelomu šesté a sedmé dekády kultovní alba německých LUCIFER'S FRIEND (ASTERIX)i sólovku ROGERA GLOVERA - BUTTERFLY BALL, aby později zakotvil v rozjuchaném pop ansáblu LES HUMPHRIES SINGERS. (Vsunu malé varování. Rocker, který zatouží identifikovat hlas JOHNA LAWTONA v hitech typu MEXICO, či MAMMA LOO by si měl dát předtím aspoň panáka!). Perličkou je, že URIAH HEEP zaplatili za jeho vyvázání ze závazků k L.H.S. sumu 40.000,- DM. Místo basáka (takřka) natrvalo obsazuje TREVOR BOLDER (ex DAVID BOWIE BAND).
Po krátkém angažmá u BRYANa FERRYho zakládá WETTON s WAKEMANem a BRUFORDem trio, které se záhy, po šesti týdnech zkoušení, rozpadá. Následuje start jazzrockové supergroup UK (BILL BRUFORD, EDDIE JOBSON, ALLAN HOLDSWORTH) a série akcí se jmény jako JACK KNIFE, ROGER CHAPMAN BAND, WISHBONE ASH, ATOLL, ASIA, PHENOMENA II, .... plus několik sólových prací, z nichž poslední - ARK ANGEL (1997) - vyšla pouze v Japonsku.
Jakkoliv si to málokdo ze skalních uměl představit - URIAH HEEP bez BYRONa - vlilo FIREFLY (září 76) všem pravověrným naději do žil. Výtečný opus s tou nejlepší uriášovskou melodikou a pompézním soundem patří k elitním hard&heavy albům sedmé dekády.
V německy mluvících teritoriích si URIAH HEEP stále drželi superhvězdný statut. Mediální tlak nabíral na síle, rozhovory, reportáže, účasti v TV show, fotky pro teenagery v Bravíčku, ... Není divu, že následovala opatrná, stylově až pop-rocková produkce dalšího alba. Prostě sázka na komerční jistotu. Výrazný hit FREE ME, podpořený reedicí letité LADY IN BLACK a miliónové prodeje nového titulu INNOCENT VICTIM, vydaného v červenci 1977, byly skutečností, ovšem za cenu opětné ztráty ryzí rockové identity.
Těžko se vystupuje z vlaku tlačeného obchodními zájmy vydavatele. Sám MICK BOX přiznává, že na jeho vkus je INNOCENT VICTIM i následné FALLEN ANGEL (září 1978) moc "do popu".
V období po vydání FALLEN ANGEL následovalo, počátkem roku 1979, nahrávání pod pracovním názvem FIVE MILES SESSION, to však bylo přerušeno odchodem LEE KERSLAKEa a následně i - s KENem HENSLEYem rozhádaného - JOHNa LAWTONa. Německý hudební tisk si na kauze, přikrmované různými protichůdnými prohlášeními zúčastněných, smlsl. Rozpracované skladby se, coby rarity, objevili na výročním 4CD boxu A TIME OF REVELATION.
JOHN LAWTON se po krátkém sólovém zastavení (HARDBEAT - 1980) znovu objevuje v sestavě LUCIFER'S FRIEND. Výsledkem je album MEAN MACHINE (1981). O rok později zakládá hard&heavy soubor REBEL, s nímž vydává vynikající, melodické album STARGAZER, které přímo evokuje vzpomínky na UH. Na toto období navazuje v roce 1990 projektem ZAR (dvě alba), plus x-tým návratem k luciferům (SUMOGRIP - 1994). V květnu 1995 vybuchuje v táboře URIAH HEEP fans bomba! LAWTON prý znovu stojí za jejich mikrofonem! Pohádka však trvala jenom jeden týden, JOHN totiž pouze dvakrát zaskočil za zdravotně indisponovaného SHAWA. (Věřím, že ten se setsakra rychle uzdravoval). Škoda. Milovníci tohoto skvělého vokalisty jej mohou nalézti i na albu EDDIE HARDIN'S WIZARD CONVENTION II (1995). Jednou z posledních známých aktivit LAWTONa je soubor GUNHILL (1997 - album NIGHT HEAT) složený z anglických muzikantů. Perličkou je, že tento band nehraje na koncertech nic z repertoáru URIAH HEEP, místo toho zní coververze RAINBOW, WHITESNAKE, BEATLES, atd.. Letos vydává JOHN LAWTON sólovku STILL PAYING MY DUES TO THE BLUES. A teď pozor - internetové tam-tamy vysílají od poloviny roku 2000 do světa zprávu, že prý cosi koncertního LAWTON kuje s HENSLEYem !!!
Oslava desátého výročí založení URIAH HEEP tedy nebyla nijak veselá, v děravé sestavě chyběl zpěvák i bubeník. V listopadu 79 přichází málo známý Walesan JOHN SLOMAN z hard'n'heavy formace LONE STAR. Ve hře byl ještě PETE GOALBY, ale jeho čas přišel až později. Za bicí usedl CHRIS SLADE od MANFRED MANNA.
CONQUEST (1980) vychází v době, kdy se tvrdá rocková scéna konečně probouzí z punk a wave šoku . Čelní protagonisté NWOBHM -IRON MAIDEN, SAXON i DEF LEPPARD, uvádějí URIAH HEEP jako jeden ze silných zdrojů své inspirace a tak se mohou veteráni těšit z uctivé přízně i mladých fans. URIAH HEEP ovšem tuto, obrovskou a zřejmě poslední, šanci dostat se zpět na výsluní popularity už nejsou schopni využít.
Navenek je vše OK. Sound je po delší době rockově přitvrzený a SLOMAN je technicky solidní (i když méně osobitý) zpěvák. Drolí se ovšem pilíř URIAH HEEP - KEN HENSLEY. Jeho kompozice jsou klišovité, bez jiskry. Rutinní macha z nich trčí na sto honů. Ještě k tomu SLOMAN na koncertech údajně nezvládá starý repretoár.
Odchodem KENa HENSLEYe definitivně končí nejvýznamější éra uriášů. BOX s BOLDERem ještě v zoufalosti navštěvují BYRONa, ten je však již v naprosto nepoužitelném stavu. Kapela se definitivně rozpadá. BOLDER míří k WISHBONE ASH, SLOMAN již předtím ke GARYmu MOOREovi a SLADE se dal dohromady s JACKIE LYNTONem.
KEN HENSLEY nelenil a bezprostředně po odchodu nahrál třetí sólovku FREE SPIRIT. V jeho doprovodném bandu zářily jména jako IAN PAICE, MARK CLARKE, TREVOR BOLDER, KENNY JONES a přitom album má ke kovanému rocku daleko, zní místy až popově. Dalším HENSLEYovým projektem byl SHOTGUN, seskupení s nímž absolvoval turné po anglických i amerických klubech a po němž nezůstaly žádné nahrávky, jelikož se HENSLEY mezitím spolčil s tvrdou jižanskou boogie kapelou BLACKFOOT, vedenou indiánem RICKem MEDLOCKem. Výsledkem spolupráce jsou alba SIOGO (1983) a VERTICAL SMILES (1984). Zejména to první je považováno za hardrockový klenot - i díky KENovým klávesám, skladbám a vokálu. Od té doby KEN HENSLEY, jeden z nejlepších rockových špílmachrů, hraje víceméně příležitostně (štěky na albech: W.A.S.P. - HEADLESS CHILDREN, CINDERELLA - HEARTBREAK STATION, VARIOUS - PETER GREEN SONGBOOK 2, JAVIER MENDOZA - TINTA Y PAPEL, BRUCE CAMERON - MIDNIGHT DAYDREAM), žije spokojeně v americkém St. Louis, prodává muzikantům aparáty značek Ampeg a Crate, pro radost vede křesťanský amatérský band VISIBLE FAITH (s nímž vydal v roce 1999 album A GLIMPSE OF GLORY) ... a jednou si dokonce zajamoval s URIAH HEEP na jejich turné.
Až loni se poprvé blýsklo, pro CD ANTHOLOGY připravil tři nové balady, na nichž muzicírují BRUCE KULICK, PAUL GILBERT, BILLY SHEEHAN a FRANKIE BANALI. Každý heavy fans by měl tyhle pány znát, proto ani neuvádím kde všude hráli. K případnému návratu do URIAH HEEP se staví (zatím) záporně, nemohl by prý již nasednout do kočovného muzikantského cirkusu, zvykl si na naprosto jiný životní styl. Jako host (vedle například MIKEa SAFRONa z PAVLOV'S DOG) je KEN přítomen na dvou skladbách letošního debutového alba americké progrockové skupiny URBAN SPRAWL.
Poslední zprávy hovoří jednak o novém sólovém albu RUNNING BLIND připravovaném na jaro 2001 a o live CD bandu HENSLEY/LAWTON cca. v téže době (prý bude obsahovat 13 songů, z toho 9 HEEP klasik a 4 sólovky KENa a prý je členem bandu i basák PAUL NEWTON z původní sestavy UH!). Uf!
ZNOVUZROZENÍ
Na jaře 1981 zahajuje neúnavný MICK BOX resuscitační práce na vzkříšení kapely. Znovunalezený LEE KERSLAKE s sebou přivádí BOBa DAISLEYe (ex RAINBOW, OZZY OSBOURNE, WIDOWMAKER), za mikrofon se (na druhý pokus - před dvěma lety byla dána přednost SLOMANovi) staví PETER GOALBY z TRAPEZE. Posledním novicem je JOHN SINCLAIR, klávesák z HEAVY METAL KIDS, dávné to předkapely URIAH HEEP. Zbytek roku se sestava sehrává a připravuje nový materiál.
S napětím a nejistotou čekali fans na NEW LINE-UP URIAH HEEP. Není divu, chyběl pevný středobod všeho dosavadního dění - KEN HENSLEY. ABOMINOG, vydaný 19.3.1982, rozhodně není špatnou deskou. Bohužel má však máloco společného se starými 70' URIAH HEEP. GOALBY připomíná nosovým zabarvením hlasu LOU GRAMMA z FOREIGNER, typická spádová melodika zní ojediněle a kompozicím chybí i charakteristická elegance. Na průzkumné koncertní turné v malých evropských halách navazuje triumfální srpnové vystoupení na festivalu MONSTERS OF ROCK před 40.000 teens davem, po němž se URIAH HEEP přesunují do Skandinávie. Těžiště těchto vystoupení tvoří tzv. staré fláky.
Zhruba po roce (květen 1983) vychází HEAD FIRST, druhý pokus nové sestavy, o kterém beze zbytku platí to, co bylo řečeno o ABOMINOG. Solidní hardrock, jenž je však třeba poslouchat bez fandovských UH předsudků. V dubnu 1983 se do sestavy vrací TREVOR BOLDER, BOB DAISLEY odchází k OZZYMU (a pak ke GARY MOOREovi, BLACK SABBATH, MALMSTEENovi, LONE RANGER, MOTHERS ARMY, CARMINE APPICE GUITAR ZEUS). Taky on je evidentně pilný chlapec. Následuje světové turné, kdy kapele neúnavně vzdávají hold čerstvé heavy metalové soubory i jejich mládežnické publikum. To drží kapelu při životě.
Po finančním průšvihu, spojeném s neuváženou investicí do letecké přepravy (!), končí firma Bronze, pročež si MICK & SPOL. hledají nové angažmá u CBS Portrait (dnes SONY). Přestože se EQUATOR (březen 1985), mimo okruh hard&heavy fans (GB v LP-HM Charts NR.9), komerčně příliš neprosadí, považuji jej za výrazně nejlepší kousek s GOALBYM. Do kompozic se totiž vrátila ona postrádaná elegance a pompa, zní bohaté chóry, skladby mají zase švih. Je paradoxem, že právě toto album vyšlo na CD velmi opožděně (vánoce 98!) a je proto doslova utajeno před většinou fanoušků. Tři skladby lze nalézt na A TIME OF REVELATION.
Na podzim 1986 se v URIAH HEEP odehrává poslední personální rošáda, kdy po krátkém zkoušení STEFFa FONTAINa (JOSHUA) nahrazuje GOALBYho u mikrofonu BERNIE SHAW (ex GRAND PRIX, PRAYING MANTIS), zatímco již pár měsíců předtím usedl namísto SINCLAIRa ke klávesám jeho souputník z GRAND PRIX - PHIL LANZON.
Ještě předtím však 28.2.1985 umírá alkoholem a drogami zdevastovaný DAVID BYRON. Tímto tragickým okamžikem v srdcích fanoušků definitivně zhasla naděje, že snad někdy ... V době odchodu z URIAH HEEP měl DAVID BYRON za sebou již jednu sólovku TAKE NO PRISONERS (1975), s níž mu z UH vypomohl MICK BOX a LEE KERSLAKE, v jedné skladbě se dokonce mihne akustická kytara KENa HENSLEYe. Pouze dva, tři kousky však dosahují špičkové uriášovské úrovně. V roce 1976 vzniká nadějná formace ROUGH DIAMOND. Vedle BYRONa v ní funguje kytarista CLEM CLEMPSON (HUMBLE PIE, COLOSSEUM), ex WINGS drummer GEOFF BRITTON, baskytarista WILLIE BATH a klávesák DAMON BUTCHER. V březnu 1977 vychází hvězdné formaci stejnojmenné album. V té době jsem byl na vojně a slyšel z něj pouze pár songů na Svobodné Evropě. Pamatuju si jen, že mně tehdy moc neoslovily. Ovšem vím co dokáže nostalgie, takže se těším až snad někdy vyjde reedice. V roce 1978 se skladatel, multi-instrumentalista a popař na ultimum - DANIEL BOONE doslova zmocnil BYRONova zpěvu, ba dá se klidně říci, že jej hudebně znásilnil, aby tak společně zplodili BABY FACE KILLER. Katastrofu svého image umocnil BYRON svým playbackem a tanečkem v německé TV. Na scéně se objevuje ROBIN GEORGE, hráč známý vyznavačům pompézní rockové melodiky, jenž pomáhá DAVIDovi sestavit BYRON BAND a nahrát, po delší době opět rockové, album ON THE ROCKS. I když není extra povedené, zejména kompozičně, je to vlastně rozlučka s BYRONovým excelentním hlasem i když DAVID ještě stihl údajně nahrát tři coververze (SPOOKY TOOTH - THAT WAS ONLY YESTERDAY, DOORS - WAITING FOR THE SUN a soulový evegreen PRIDE AND JOY). Tyto vzácnosti však doposud nebyly vydány. Když tak po sobě čtu tu BYRONovu ministory, napadá mně jediné - málokomu se asi "podařilo" promarnit "do mrtě" tak velký talent jako jemu.
DRUHOLIGOVÁ STABILITA
V prosinci 1987 dochází k památné události. Bezprostředně po ruském superturné, zaznamenaném na LIVE IN MOSCOW (7/88), přijíždějí URIAH HEEP do ČSSR! Vyprodané koncerty (Ostrava, Hradec Králové) symbolicky prolomily bolševickou kletbu, zapovídající import rockových kapel do jejich rudého skanzenu. Vzpomínám, jak si dědci z pořadatelské služby ve Vítkovické hale zacpávali rukama nohama své dechovkou hýčkané boltce před přívalem decibelů (těch teda bylo opravdu "ňeúrekom", zvukaři asi zapoměli přehodit šavle z moskevského stadiónového nastavení) a jak marně hlídali vlastnoručně pečlivě zarovnané židličky před náporem blahem pološílených rockerů. SHAWův chvějivý vokál s coverdalovským pnutím slušně ladil se starším repertoárem, takže i skalní puristé se mohli radovat vespolek.
Ustálená sestava nahrává v odstupu dvou let dvě takřka identická studiová alba, RAGING SILENCE ( duben 1989) a DIFFERENT WORLD (březen 1991). Melodický, staromilský hardrock - ovšem se zanedbatelným seventies-uriah akcentem.
URIAH HEEP se, tak jako ostatně všichni veteráni, musí neustále vyrovnávat se situacemi, kdy publikum na koncertech bouřlivě aplauduje starý repertoár, zatímco nový je přijímán podstatně chladněji a kdy kdejaká mládežnická heavy-melody úderka vykrádá jejich stylotvornou pokladnici. Snad i proto je další studiovka SEA OF LIGHT (1995) plná odkazů i paralel na zlatou éru. Již fantasy přebal ROGERA DEANA navozuje tu správnou nostalgickou náladu a obsah ji stvrzuje. Spádová melodika, chóry, klenuté balady, kytarové výšivky, ... všechno se snahou navázat na ty nej tradice, ovšem málo platné - chybí kompoziční drahokamy HENSLEYOVa formátu. Zřejmě již navždy.
V září 1998 se na pultech objevilo další studiové album SONIC ORIGAMI. 14 songů bylo nahráno na jaře téhož roku v produkci PIPA WILLIAMSE. Styl i sound většiny z nich plynule navazuje na retrosound předchozí SEA OF LIGHT, takže staromilci, kteří dokáží být ke svým pardálům shovívaví, si jej mohou i vychutnat. Na podzim 1998 pak odehráli URIAH HEEP další turné. V termínové listině byla již tradičně zastoupena i ČR.
Od té doby URIAH HEEP zvolna připravují další studiové album. Předtím, na přelomu 2000/2001 by mělo vyjít první DVD skupiny s názvem LEGEND CONTINUES a live CD FUTURE ECHOES OF THE PAST.

POST SCRIPTUM - 2001
V současné době se kolem URIAH HEEP dějí zajímavé věci. Například 23.března 2001 vychází video SAILING THE SEA OF LIGHT. Rovněž tak finišuje vydání pamlsku v podobě tří edic (stříbrná, zlatá, platinová) CD/DVD s názvem UNPLUGGED. Záznam pořídili URIAH HEEP na dvou speciálních londýnských session v prosinci minulého roku. Playlist zahrnuje vedle klasických kousků WONDERWORLD, CIRCUS, COME BACK TO ME, atd. i novější songy z posledního období.
Jak již bylo uvedeno, koncem roku 2000 zahájil činnost senzační projekt KENa HENSLEYe a JOHNa LAWTONa s názvem HENSLEY LAWTON BAND, v jehož rámci se od dubna do září 2001 odehraje evropské turné. 12 května pak bude v Hamburgu na charitativním koncertu a za účasti orchestru uvedena rocková suita SALISBURY. Od 28. února 2002 si mohou fanoušci Uriah Heep zakoupit záznam prosincové Magician?s Birthday Party, v jejímž rámci se na pódiu objevil po boku současné sestavy bývalý šéf Ken Hensley a zpěvák John Lawton! Jsou připraveny tři verze: CD, DVD a BOX (DVD/CD/kniha).
KEN HENSLEY VE ZLÍNĚ
12.6.2002, Zlín, klub Golem, cca. 21:30 – 23:20
Kdyby před 30-ti lety přijel do ČSSR Ken Hensley se svými Uriah Heep, zaplnil by asi Strahov. 12.6.2002 se nás v rockovém klubu Golem sešlo pouhopouhých pár stovek nejvěrnějších. Spousta zlínských a okolních čtyřicátníků, pro mně ode dneška bývalých rockerů, zůstala doma: jeden prý zapomněl, druhý ze rozešel z babou (se kterou ani nechodil), třetímu bylo líto několika stovek (které radši propije za dva dny), čtvrtý prý má jiné starosti, pátý musel asi cosi komusi pálit, šestý prý nevěděl, sedmý ... prostě naprostá devastace mladistvých ideálů a kulturnosti vůbec. Přitom všichni společně jsme Uriáše kdysi vzývali jako své hudební bohy. Čest města zachraňovali fanoušci z dálav, Slovenska, Rýmařova, Rožnova, Brna, Uherského Hradiště, Plzně, Prahy, ... Díky přátelé.
Na druhé straně, tihle ex-rockeři potrestali jenom sebe sama. Život je o zážitcích, a vidět a poslouchat autora Lady In Black, Wizard, July Morning a Easy Livin‘ z pár metrů a mít možnost po koncertě získat jeho podpis, úsměv, potřes rukou a společné foto, patří k největším a nevymazatelným. Navíc povýší každému ze šťastlivců z Golemu požitek z budoucích poslechů kteréhokoliv z klasických alb Uriah Heep do výšin absentérům nedosažitelných. Ponechme ale blázny jejich osudu, ať se třeba picnou, a vraťme se do sálu.
Stylový předkrm, pro zlínské rockové slavnosti již tradičně, obstarali bluesrockoví Staří psi posíleni o dechovou sekci. Pěkně nás naladili a rozpumpovali.
Ken Hensley letos vydal svěží sólovku Running Blind, troufám si říci svou nejlepší, však si také dovolil přehrát takřka její polovinu, a dal dohromady opravdu záviděníhodnou kapelu Free Spirit, kde vedle něj hrají takoví borci jako veterán baskytary Andy Pyle (Blodwyn Pig, Savoy Brown, Kinks, Juicy Lucy, Alvin Lee, Gary Moore, Sutherland Brothers, Rod Stewart, Wishbone Ash), excelentní kytarový prstolamač Dave Kilminster (Guitar Player Magazine – kytarista roku 1993) a mladý bicmen Pete Ryley (ostruhy u Paula Gilberta z Mr.Big).
Slyšet grandiózní nástup Hensleyho originálních Hammondů napojených na pravé Leslie boxy je jako ocitnout se uprostřed příbojové vlny tónů. Mistr samozřejmě prokládal nové kousky toužebně očekávanými uriášovskými evegreeny. Prvním vrcholem se stala majestátní balada July Morning, a vůbec nevadilo, že Hensley nevyzpívával nedostižné Byronovy tenorové vokální linky. Čtvrté album zastupovala slavným akustickým intrem uvedená Wizard a pádivá Easy Livin‘, k níž byla předřazena bluesově překopaná Stealin‘ ze Sweet Freedom, poslední to velké desky UH.
Kapitolou pro sebe samou se stalo uvedení zlidovělé Lady In Black, jedné z nejprostších a nejnádhernějších rockových písní vůbec. Elektrická poprava akustického pomníku, tak by se dal nazvat způsob, jak se Ken Hensley se svým nejslavnějším dílem vypořádal. Úvodní, až brutální kytarový dvojzápřah nikterak nenapovídal co se chystá, teprve zhruba po minutě přistoupil Ken k mikrofonu a zazpíval v duchu originálu první sloku velebného songu. A tak to šlo s menšími obměnami dokola, do krajnosti vytvrzená mezihra, klasika ve zpěvu a ve druhé polovině nezbytná výpomoc nás všech ve „vontském“ bezeslovném chóru. Šokující, ale když si to zpětně promítnu, k extázi vygradované desetiminutové provedení.
Rozlučku v přídavku obstarala lawtonovská hitůvka Free Me a odpichovka Tell Me z nového cédé. A zazvonil zvonec, pohádky byl konec. Ne, nebyl. Neuvěřitelně mladistvě vyzerající „indián“ Ken Hensley (s drobnou výpomocí barvy na vlasy) se po nezbytné sprše objevil spolu s celou kapelou u stánku se suvenýry a hodinu se s úsměvem podepisoval a fotil. A to si prosím s námi před koncertem ¾ hodiny povídal v rozhovoru pro rockové AZ Rádio o tom, kde žije, jak vzpomíná na Byrona, Thaina, vedlejšák Weed, své aktivity ve Formuli, co rock v USA, atakdále, atakdále. Přepis interview možná někdy příště, záleží na přání vás čtenářů.
No nic, pustím si chutnou Running Blind, plus třeba nejnej Demons & Wizards a prodloužím si včerejší slastné okamžiky.

Ken Hensley pro AZ Rádio - rozhovor před koncertem
Uriah Heep patřili v první polovině 70.let k absolutně nejoblíbenějším světovým rockovým interpretům v tehdejším Československu. Neexistovala teenagerská párty bez balad Lady In Black, The Park, nebo pádivých Easy Livin a Look At Yourself. Bývalého lídra Uriah Heep, Kena Henlseyho, jsme při jeho návštěvě Zlína s jeho novou skupinou Free Spirit a projektem Running Blind požádali o rozhovor a on mile rád souhlasil.

Kene, měli jste v oné době ve skupině nějaké informace o svých početných fanoušcích za železnou oponou, v Československu, Rusku, Polsku, Maďarsku ?
Ken Hensley: Ne, bohužel, v 70. letech jsme neměli žádné informace, protože jsme zde nemohli ani koncertovat a tak jsme ty informace neměli kde vzít. Stále mě tedy překvapuje - jako třeba před pár týdny v Rusku - jak důležitá byla pro ně hudba Uriah Heep . Stejnou míru nadšení jsem zažil na koncertě ve Vídni, kde byla spousta fanoušků z Chorvatska a Slovinska. Je hezké vidět, že politická svoboda s sebou přinesla i svobodu hudební. Mám z toho hroznou radost, jsem šťastný, že jsem se toho dožil.

Dovolím si malý historický exkurz do tvé hudební kariéry před Uriah Heep. Působil jsi i ve skupině Gods, kterou prošli i další světově známí hudebníci - Mick Taylor z Rolling Stones, Greg Lake z Emerson, Lake & Palmer, John Glass***** z Jethro Tull, a samozřejmě nesmíme zapomenout na tvé souputníky z Uriah Heep - Lee Kerslakea a Paula Newtona. Skupina Gods nahrála dvě skvělá alba, která již nesou tvůj rukopis, později rozvinutý Uriah Heep. Existuje navíc album Orgasm, vydané v roce 1970 pod názvem Head Machine, které má být údajně nevydaným třetím albem Gods, kde jsi uveden jako Ken Leslie. Vzpomeneš si ještě vůbec na tuto dávnou story z konce 60.let ?
Ken Hensley: Ano, stejně jako album, které jsem nahrál s Weed - obě byla smluvní. Požádali mě, abych napsal pár písniček a tak jsem to udělal. Pak mě požádali, abych si je sám zahrál, tak jsem to taky udělal. Tehdy to byla otázka peněz, které jsem neměl a potřeboval.
… a proč změna na Ken Leslie?
Ken Hensley: Protože ta smlouva byla podmíněna jiným jménem. Jako George Harrison, když hrál na jednom z mých alb, byl uveden pod jménem Harry Georgeson. Je to pitomé, ale takový je byznys.

Dovol malou mimohudební otázku. V 70.letech se v tisku objevily tvé fotografie v monopostu Formule 2. Dokonce jsi prý měl v této branži obchodní zájmy. Je sportovní motorismus stále tvým koníčkem?
Ken Hensley: Ano, miluji motosport. Sleduji Grand Prix, hlavně Formuli 1. Dívám se na automobilové závody, jsem prostě velký fanda těchto věcí.
…a jezdíš sám?
Ken Hensley: Jezdil jsem pět let a kupodivu žiji (smích). Vzdal jsem to a už se jen dívám.

Po odchodu z Uriah Heep jsi vedle sólové dráhy nějaký čas působil v Blackfoot a nahrál dvě alba: Siogo (1983) a Vertical Smiles (1984), bohužel dodnes nesehnatelná na CD. Pak jsi se víceméně na dlouhou dobu coby aktivní muzikant odmlčel. Proč? Únava z hektického života muzikanta?
